Update 11/01/05 Simulating Para Drops in IABSM
Simulating drops by parachute, or glider, in “I Ain’t Been Shot Mum” by Too Fat Lardies is a
difficulty. Due to the small area fought over it is perhaps best considered that troops have
dropped in areas off-table, hastily assembled themselves and are advancing on to the table to
take an objective etc. Some however, may have dropped on to the table prior to game start.
To provide the unpredictability that many players, including myself, like about IABSM, and to
recreate some of the chaos, and fog of war resulting from drops, I’ve come up with the following
ideas;
1. Airborne player needs to write an order of battle for the game, and allot a blind for each
Platoon. These need to be numbered.
2. Fakes are diced and added to the blinds pack as per Table 1: Blinds Allocation table.
These should be numbered too.
3. The Airborne player then needs to dice for his HQ Platoon if one is used, or the unit
accompanied by his highest ranking Big Man, using the table below to see if his full strength is
available for the encounter, or whether he has incurred losses during the drop.
4. This force can be deployed, as per scenario briefings.
5. The Airborne blinds pack is then handed to the defending player.
6. Table edges are diced for randomly and blinds placed on their edges by the defending
player, who obviously will not be aware of whether the blind hides a fake or real unit. The
Airborne player will however be aware of the identity of what the blind SHOULD represent.
7. When the blinds identity is revealed by spotting, or by it revealing itself, the Airborne player
then rolls according to the type of tactical elements it contains.
8. The Airborne player may then find that infact what he thought was a Platoon of three eight
man sections has infact one entire section missing, whereas another has only six men and the
third has seven men and a temporary loss of cohesion, represented by a wound.
9. Adding or subtracting one to the dice score could represent transports dropping their
contents too low, or too fast, bad or clear weather, contested or uncontested landings elsewhere.
