Algy Game 2 - A Proper Set To (Jez & Kev Vs Clive & Nige)
|
Well, after Max and I had muddled through our first game of Too Fat Lardies "Algernon
Pulls It Off" I had put in a few hours of flying time to learn the basics.
Invites went out to all the chaps to have a proper set to at Wally HQ. Max unfortunately
couldn't make it this time (...yellow!) but everyone else was right up for it!
As I was the only player who had played Algy before I decided that I should get to use
three aircraft and everyone else a pair.
As I've just bought a couple of Skytrex FE 2's I decided a little excursion to do a bit of light
bombing was in order, protected by a trio of Sopwith Camels.
Clive and Nige would play the Huns and Jez and I the RFC chaps. Jez would being in
command of the Sopwith's and I the FE 2's (not wanting to inflict two seaters on new
chaps) but I would still get to use one Camel, that of our hero Algernon Carpet-Byrnes
himself.

I set up the 6' x 4' table and placed five, well spaced, built up areas liberally around the
cloth. I rolled secretly and randomly to myself to reveal which built up area was my
target. Jez then rolled a D10 for the altitude band height of his Sopwith Camel flight,
whilst I rolled again for my FE 2's with Clive rolling for the Hun Kette.
Onto the action. The Huns were at a higher level so took full advantage of altitude
bonuses soon climbing to their full height band of 11. The FE 2's were at altitude 4
and, whilst their fighter (cover height band 6) rose to meet the enemy I ran for it at quite
low level under the approaching enemy scouts.
Clive and Nige quickly realised what
was going on and as I charged in as
Carpet-Byrnes trying to split up the
enemy formation.
Well, it worked. The game descended
into near anarchy as pilots tried to get
into position on each others tails and
new players tried to get their heads
round the basics. They all seemed to
grasp it much quicker than I had and
soon Clive managed to get his first ever
Algy kill as Willi Flascher took out my
regular piloted FE 2....
...Clive soon realised the limitations of
sprogs ability and managed to keep his
out of the sights of Carpet-Byrnes with
some impressive manoeuvring...
...Nige was having a few problems
drawing a bead on Devlin Carnatt's FE
2, due largely to the latter much slower
speed rather than my flying ability.
...Carpet-Byrnes and Kurt Manners
became involved in a very impressive
cat-and-mouse tussle filling delighted
onlookers with wonder at their flying
display (tongue firmly in cheek!)...
...I decided to bugger off elsewhere
leaving Manners for a while perplexed...
...Jez needed no second bidding
though and Major Short-Cummings,
with a really impressive dive from
across the table, promptly got on the
tail of Manners and dispatched him with
real precision. What monster had I
created by introducing Jez to the Algy
ruleset?
...However, Willi Flascher was having none of it. Cooly Clive had manouevred him onto
the tail of Jez's regular pilot and sent spinning below in an inferno for his second kill of
the evening. Unfortunately the blast had somewhat concussed the ace and he spun
temporarily out of control...
The pressure was on me now to get a kill of my own. Carpet-Byrnes had now finally
latched onto something; Clive's sprog. Unable to shake him, the sprog slowly
descended as Clive tried a succession of hard turns.
Willi Flascher the Hun Kanone had recovered his composure and performed a series of
breathtaking moves across the table and had got behind Carpet-Byrnes in an effort to
shake him. Tellingly though he was not actually 'On the tail' of the British hero.
Suddenly Major Short-Cummings slipped onto the tail of Flascher who broke of his
pursuit of Carpet-Byrnes.
Short-Cummings simply refused to be shaken off however, and fired long burst after
long burst into the evasive little Fokker. Amazingly, little damage was caused initially
but it was just a matter of time. Short-Cummings was beginning to wonder if his ammo
were duds when the little Fokker burst into flames and went spinning into the abyss.
Two kills for Jez too...
I soon managed to get on the score
sheet however. Clive's sprog had been
riddled with Algy's bullets. His speed
down to basic, fuel line severed and his
plane was soaked in fuel. He was
barely flying at altitude level 1. One
more burst would do it...
...Da, da, da....Ka-boom! The sprog
exploded in mid air. But, poor Algy was
too close. The explosion momentarily
shook him forcing him into a spin but
before he had a chance to recover the
ground was rushing up and Algy was
no more....Algernon most definately
didn't pull it off this time!
...Where once there had been nine
aircraft there were now but three. My
own FE2, Jez's Short-Cummings'
Camel, now almost out of ammo, and
Nigel's Albatros. All to soon it would fall
to only two aircraft remaining...
...Devlin Carnatt's FE2 had
successfully managed to bomb its
target and was now flying desperately
for home...
..Nigel pounced though using his faster
speed and a quick descent to get on
the tail of the unfortunate Carnatt. It
didn't last long. A quick staccato of
accurate MG fire and the FE2 was all
aflame and pitching into the
countryside.
All in all an excellent nights entertainment. Clive and Jez had a brace of kills apiece with Nige and me accounting for one each. Bloody good fun and a great set of challenging rules.
